Calvary's Music Program

Calvary Schools of Holland features a rich & diverse music program for students of all ages.

Kindergarten through 5th Grade Music

Students participate in engaging, fun, and challenging musical learning. They create their own movement pieces, compose music, listen to and compare a variety of musical genres and styles, evaluate performances, and improvise within a given phrase.

Likewise, hand chimes, recorders, boomwhackers, and xylophones help students explore the elements of music including: dynamics, tempo, timbre, form, rhythm, melody, harmony, time signature, phrasing, etc.

Opportunities for sharing their own giftedness in dance, acting, singing, and playing are plentiful at in class performances, as well. We have lots of fun!

1st through 6th Grade Choir

Students delve into an expanding repertoire of music representing diverse cultures, genres, and styles. Correct singing techniques, appropriate stance, space, and breath support are taught and practiced. They not only learn to match pitch and develop their inner ear, they also learn to sight sing music in traditional music notation. Movement, percussive instruments, dance, and drama are regularly included in their lessons and performances.

Bands

Beginner, Intermediate, and Varsity Bands have a special place at Calvary. Students are equipped with musical training and life skills that will benefit them for a lifetime. They have the opportunity to play brass instruments such as trumpets, trombones, baritones, and tubas; woodwinds such as flute, clarinet, saxophone, or oboe, and bassoon; and a whole variety of percussion instruments.

Not only do they learn how to play beautifully, but they also learn a vast array of musical theory, styles, composers, history, and the art of composition, themselves.

Bands perform at several concerts throughout the year, participate in Band Olympics, and gear up for an annual practice challenge.

Singing Crusaders

Students in grades 3 through 6 audition to join this elementary honors choir. Its purpose is to minister to local nursing homes throughout the year by sharing God's love through singing.

Students are challenged to sing more difficult literature and include dance, movement, and instruments in their performances.

Highlights of the year include a retreat at Camp Geneva in the Fall, Music in the Parks choral festival at Cedar Point in the Spring, and many opportunities to share their gifts in performances throughout the school year!
